Tangled Tides - Karen Amanda Hooper
Ah, sir, live in the bosom of the waters! There alone is independence. There I recognise no masters! There I am free. - Jules Verne, 2000 Leagues Under The Sea

at the height of a hurricane on her island home, Yara Jones encounters Treygan. the last thing she remembers was wishing for him to bring her to a place where she could be safe. she wakes up with fins instead and to a world beneath the sea. the life she thought she had and knew shifted not only literally but also geographically.
author Karen Amanda Hooper's novel introduced me to the realm of merfolk, selkies, sirens and gorgons. i was mesmerized by her fascinating tale from the first page to the last. the three main protagonists speak alternately and their voices resonate with magic, mystery, intrigue, rivalry, secrets, passion and romance.
i loved how the story flowed and how all the characters were given significance. each one was important and no matter how strange some events seemed to play out at first, everything and everyone was there for a reason. i also loved the worldbuilding and i find the details of the different species well thought of.
i found in this book one of the most memorable and beautiful scenes i have ever read. it was the healing vigil that the merfolk did for one of their stricken kindred. i thought it was solemn and poignant at the same time.
this is an amazing book that i did not want to let go of. when i was done, i felt like a fish out of water. i wanted more.
if you love the ocean, are fascinated by its depths and are looking for something truly original, i highly recommend this book. it made me think that there might indeed be a mythical and magical world out there underneath the sea that exists and which remains hidden from us. perhaps you would too.
